Things beautiful

I love fall.  I love the colors, the crisp air, the reduction of yard work.  Fall brings such a homey feeling – beckoning family to come into the home and center themselves there, inviting the warmth of candles, warm apple cider and bubble baths.  Autumn means the end of heat and humidity, swimming in lakes, camping, flip-flops, popsicles,  and trampoline jumping with the sprinkler.  However, fall ushers in jeans and sweatshirts, hot cocoa, enjoyable bonfires in the back yard, crockpot meals, football, weekend projects, and a slowing pace.

A day like today cannot be beat.  My van read 74 on the way home from work and the wind is just a very light breeze.  The trees are in full color and I wish I had time to drive around to take more pictures.  These are a few of the beauty I captured in my own yard.

Fall also brings some reality – most plants can’t live through our winters, so they are dying, leaving seeds for me to collect.  The cycle of life is so evident in the dramatically changing seasons here.   Some trees are already bare, hardening the landscape for winter.

Life on the plain is always somewhere in the cycle – today, it is just extremely visible.  Give us a few more weeks and the trees will all be bare for a very long time, sleeping away the cold, depending on strong root systems we can’t even see.  They are not all that pretty in the winter, but what is going on beneath the surface is amazing.  Just like life sometimes. Looks like it is time to do some yard maintenance.

Ecclesiastes 3:1,2

There is a time for everything,
and a season for every activity under heaven:

a time to be born and a time to die,
a time to plant and a time to uproot,
